As part of its “State of the Students” Address, the group blasted Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor Andrew Cuomo for what they say is a privatization of public education from kindergarten through college that makes it for students to take advantage of higher education.
The rally comes months after the CUNY Board of Trustees voted to increase tuition at public colleges and universities.
Students who took to the podium called for free tuition as part of their list of demands, as well as the ending of school closures and what they say is brutality against students by the NYPD.
City Councilman Charles Barron was the only politician to attend the rally.
He signed a pledge supporting CUNY students.
According to CUNY, six out of 10 full-time undergraduate students do not pay tuition, because they receive financial aid.
